Work on schedule at Heworth
Construction work has begun on the Heworth Leisure Centre in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.
When complete, the site will house the North East's first indoor boarding facility as well as a 25m swimming pool, a learner and toddlers pool a fitness gym, multi-purpose room and changing facilities for outdoor sports.
The new Heworth Leisure Centre will be built by Hertfordshire-based Willmott Dixon and is due to open in Summer 2010 when it will replace the 1963 built Felling Pool.
The centre will house a FlowRider, allowing all-year round water sports.
The Heworth Leisure Centre is the second of two new leisure centres to be built as part of Gateshead Council's £29m Building an Active Future programme.
Work on the first, in Blaydon, began in April this year with completion expected in Autumn 2010.
Gateshead Leisure Centre, and Dunston pool will also reopen after refurbishment in 2010 followed by Birtley pool in 2011.
