Work starts on 2014 Athletes' Village
Glasgow City Council (GCC) has revealed that work has started on the £150m City Legacy Homes development - to be used as the 2014 Commonwealth Games Athletes' Village.
The 38.5-hectare (95.1-acre) Dalmarnock site is set to house 6,500 competitors and officials during the Games, before being turned into a "desirable" neighbourhood for the East End. Construction work is to be led by the City Legacy Consortium - comprising developers and contractors such as CCG; Cruden; Mactaggart and Mickel; and WH Malcolm.
More than 300 private houses; 300 homes for rent; 100 homes for mid-market rent; and a new 120-bed care home for the elderly will comprise the neighbourhood in legacy. The scheme will deliver a minimum 60 per cent reduction in carbon emissions from the new homes constructed, while the removal of temporary Games facilities will open up more land for redevelopment.
GCC executive member for the Commonwealth Games Archie Graham said: "This development will leave one of the most visible examples of both the legacy from the Games and Glasgow's regeneration."
