World Leisure announces five-year strategy

By Tom Walker    24 Feb 2009

The World Leisure Organization (WLO) has unveiled its strategic planning initiative for the next five years.

The paper, called Leisure: Enhancing the human Condition Priorities and Strategies 2009-2014, has been framed to support the United Nations Millennium Development Goals project.

WLO has listed six priorities for its new strategy – linking to the United Nation Millennium goals; enhancing research and scholarship in leisure; advocating for leisure by creating policy statements; expanding educational opportunities; strengthening partnerships and relationships with organisations and associations; and to expand membership of the WLO in numerical and geographical terms.

The WLO aims to form a "robust" relationship with the United Nations and as part of the new strategy, plans to appoint a WLO representative to the United Nations Delegate Assembly.

It also unveiled plans to create a global academy for culture, sport and leisure while establishing a new classification of educational programmes focused on creating independent World Leisure Research and Development Centres.

The organisation will also undertake a membership push among policy makers and students in an attempt to boost numbers.

Formed in 1952, WLO is a non-profit, non-governmental body which aims to promote leisure as integral to social, cultural, economic and sustainable environment development.
