Plans to build a new £12m leisure centre in Wrexham will rely on the closure of the Plas Madoc Leisure and Activity Centre near Ruabon, which are now awaiting the results of a public consultation into the issue.

The proposal to close the facility by Wrexham County Borough Council – plus the Waterworld Leisure Centre in Wrexham town centre – followed a review by the Council of the 11 sports and leisure facilities it operates, as it attempts to address a budget cut of £13m for 2014/15.

Wrexham Council, which faces budget saving targets of at least £45 million over the next five years, has outlined plans to build a leisure centre to replace Waterworld in the town centre, at a cost of £12m when funding allows - but will consider the views expressed in the consultation before making a final decision.

The final decision regarding the future of Plas Madoc Leisure Centre has been deferred until February while the future of the leisure centre in Acrefair was set to be decided at the Council Executive Board on January 14, however the public consultation period has now been extended until January 31.
