eBay flouts law on World Cup ticket sales

13 Apr 2006

Internet operator eBay may face a legal battle with Fifa for selling unofficial World Cup tickets on its auction website.

On 10 April the government amended the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, making it illegal to sell tickets for World Cup games.

The amendment is primarily aimed at touts who trade sports tickets online.

However, eBay is reportedly contravening the amendment by continuing to allow the sale of tickets on their site by customers based abroad or registered overseas.
