East Staffordshire Borough Council's (ESBC) decision to approve plans for a new National Football Centre near Burton-upon-Trent is set to be subject to a judicial review.

According to the BBC, local residents have lodged a claim for a review over objections to a hotel and 28 homes being included as part of the multi-million pound St George's Park scheme, which was given the green light in May. An ESBC spokesperson told the broadcaster: "The council would like to state that the judicial review relates to the housing element of the application and not the actual Football Association (FA) centre application."

A coach education and training facility and a sports injury and research centre form part of plans for the 330-acre (133.5-hectare) St George's Park scheme, as well as a number of pitches and a multi-purpose sports hall. The development is being led by the FA alongside kit supplier and sponsor Umbro, which has secured an extension to its partnership with the national governing body until 2018.
