£3.5m redevelopment of Brockwell Lido completed

By Jo Talbot    15 Oct 2007

Brockwell Lido has opened its health and wellbeing centre, marking the completion of a £3.5m redevelopment.

The new health and fitness centre includes a 100-station fitness suite, group cycling area, therapy rooms, hydrotherapy pool and changing rooms.

Three multi-purpose studios have also been provided, offering traditional fitness classes, such as circuits and yoga, as well as more unusual workouts including acrobatics, capoeira, drumming and meditation.

The fitness facility is designed to make Brockwell Lido self-sustainable and no longer reliant on public funding.

The first phase of the refurbishment of the facility was completed in June and included a revamp of the Lido’s entrance, changing facilities, toilets and pool surrounds.

“This really is a tremendous new facility and a further boost to sports provision in the borough,” said Cllr Lib Peck, Cabinet Member for Environment and Culture at Lambeth Council.

The Lido, which is a Grade II listed building, was originally opened in 1937 and is operated on a 25-year lease by Fusion Leisure, the not-for-profit organisation providing community services in south London. It has received £500,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the redevelopment.

Located within Brockwell Park, the whole front elevation has been taken down and rebuilt six meters further into the park. English Heritage chose this solution from a number of options developed by architects Pollard Thomas Edwards Associates (PTE).

The work on the facility was funded and carried out by Alliance Leisure.

Jeremy Lake, centre manager, said: “When the Lido opened 70 years ago it combined the style of Art Deco design with the new interest in health and fitness. We’ve been careful to preserve that concept and simply added a new layer which will meet the expectations of the 21st Century user.”
