Plans for the Basildon Sporting Village project have been submitted to Basildon Council.

The site, which has already been approved as a potential pre-Games training camp for the 2012 Olympics, will feature a 50m swimming pool, a learner pool, a gymnastics centre and a fitness suite.

The plans also include a climbing wall, a 750-seater covered terrace, six floodlit artificial five-a-side pitches and new parking bays.

Community Solutions for Leisure submitted the application, which is due to heard in March next year.

Richard Harper, chair of trustees of the South Essex Gymnastics Club, said: “We are pleased to hear that the application has been submitted, and fully support the Sporting Village facility.

“Our 1,600 members can look forward to a fully-equipped new complex where we can continue with wide range of gymnastics-based facilities covering recreation, special needs and elite levels.”

The centre is expected to open in 2010.
