sportscotland to invest £3.5m in Commonwealth Games legacy
Sports facilities across Scotland are to receive a £3.5m investment from sportscotland as part of the organisation’s drive to boost participation and deliver a legacy for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
The money will see projects in Dunfermline, Orkney, East Kilbride, Edinburgh, Aberdeenshire, Dumfries and Galloway and Troon all benefiting.
Louise Martin, chair of sportscotland, said: “The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow provide a clear focus and opportunity to develop many aspects of Scotland’s sporting infrastructure.
"We believe that improving Scotland’s stock of sports facilities across the country is one of the most important and greatest challenges that we must jointly tackle if we are to encourage more to become active.
“I am particularly delighted to see community projects for a wide variety of sports, including many of which will feature in the Games, benefiting from this investment across Scotland.”
Some of the larger projects include a £1.1m refurbishment of Carnegie Leisure in Dunfermline; a £1.2m extension of the Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall; a £500,000 award to assist with the refurbishment of the Dollan Aqua Centre in East Kilbride and £450,000 to create a multi-sport facility at Inch Park in Edinburgh.
