Five cities to bid for 2024 Olympics: Paris, LA, Hamburg, Rome and Budapest

Hamburg (Germany), Rome (Italy), Budapest (Hungary), Los Angeles (US) and Paris (France) have submitted official bids to host the 2024 summer Olympic Games.

Los Angeles is a late addition to the list, following the withdrawal of Boston from the process in July. Boston’s decision left the US Olympic Committee (USOC) – which had committed to submitting a bid for the 2024 Games – with just weeks to plan and come up with an alternative candidate.

Toronto, Canada, was understood to have also been preparing a challenge to secure the 2024 Games, but has decided not to submit an official bid document to the IOC.

The winner will be elected and announced at an International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting in Lima, Peru, in September 2017.

In an official statement, IOC said the 2024 bidding process will see a “very strong field of candidates” battle it out for the rights to host the Games.

“We are welcoming five outstanding and highly qualified Candidate Cities,” said IOC president Thomas Bach.

He added that the bidding process for 2024 will be the first to be undertaken under new rules outlined by IOC’s Olympic Agenda 2020 document, published last year.

“Olympic Agenda 2020 has shaped the candidature process more as an invitation and the cities have responded by engaging with the IOC through dialogue and cooperation,” Bach said.

“In the new invitation process the IOC learnt that all the candidates are embracing Olympic Agenda 2020 from their respective vision for the future of their city. Sustainability and legacy are the cornerstones of each candidate.”

Olympic Agenda 2020 also offers the Candidate Cities the opportunity to reduce costs related to the bidding process.

The number of presentations to be made by the cities, for example, has been reduced from nine to three. In addition, the IOC is now covering the travel costs and accommodation of a number of delegates to the presentations made to the IOC, as well as costs related to the visit of the IOC Evaluation Commission.
