The Scottish Government has announced that seven museums across the country, which have collections of national significance, are to share more than £200,000.

Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) will distribute the funding on behalf of the government, including a grant of more than £21,000 to the University of Edinburgh to conduct research into its collection of musical instruments. The Royal College of Surgeons will receive more than £26,000 to establish a filmed history archive, while nearly £40,000 will help the Scottish Football Association Museum Trust to enhance interpretation of historic objects.

Other recipients of grants include Aberdeen City Council (£39,754); North Lanarkshire Council (£39,948); Auchindrain Trust (£40,000) and Dumfries and Galloway Council (£40,000). Scottish culture minister Fiona Hyslop said: "The Recognition Scheme rightly ensures there are additional resources available for some of the most important collections in Scotland.
