£2.5m revamp for art deco Hotel Cumberland

By Helen Patenall    12 Mar 2007

Hotel Cumberland in Bournemouth will reopen on 21 June, following a £2.5m refurbishment to restore the premises to their former art deco glory.

Designer Sue Mirco and resident director Kevin Wood are working on the development, which includes a major upgrade of the outdoor swimming pool – the largest in Bournemouth.

“We want the hotel to be a place where people can enjoy chic and sophisticated surroundings, excellent service and top quality food. We hope that local people will also make the most of the new facilities,” said Kevin Wood.

Mirco has previously worked with owners Terry Taylor and Brian Shone, when she helped transform another of their hotels – Hotel Gleneagles in Torbay, which inspired comedy series Fawlty Towers.

“Our launch at Hotel Gleneagles in September last year attracted worldwide media interest and really put Torquay back on the tourist map,” said Shone. “We are aiming to attract similar interest with the Cumberland launch. In the meantime, we would be delighted to hear from any guests who stayed at the hotel during its glory days as the top Jewish hotel in Europe.” Details: www.cumberlandbournemouth.co.uk £2.5m revamp for art deco Hotel Cumberland Hotel Cumberland in Bournemouth will reopen on 21 June, following a £2.5m refurbishment to restore the premises to their former art deco glory.
