£5.7m Leeds leisure centre opens
The John Smeaton leisure centre in east Leeds has opened after a year of construction and refurbishment.
The £5.7m facility – paid for by a £3.9m grant from the Big Lottery Fund, £1.7m from Leeds City Council and £125,000 funding from Sport England – has been built on the site of the previous John Smeaton centre, which closed in 2004.
It boasts a 60-station gym with changing rooms, a bar and a function room, as well as a full-size, floodlit Astroturf football pitch, an indoor sports hall and a multi-use games area.
The existing 25m swimming pool has also been refurbished and now includes a dedicated shower and changing village.
The council’s executive member for leisure, John Proctor, said: “The range of facilities the centre boasts, and the activities that will take place there, means the whole community will benefit.”
