Abacus thinking inside the box
Abacus Lighting provided a unique solution for Silverstone's new £28m Wing complex by providing both mains power and water for race crews.
The Wing, the Northamptonshire circuit's new pit and paddock area, has been received as one of the world's finest motorsport developments, combining iconic design and impressive facilities.
Abacus were approached to develop a solution that not only provided brilliant lighting but also mains power and water outlets for the race support teams.
The result was system whereby both were provided via a watertight cabinet fitted to each lighting column.
By using Abacus' Orion fittings the number of lighting points that were originally specified was reduced, whilst still ensuring that lighting levels were achieved.
This provided a cost saving to the project not just in terms of columns, but the associated costs such as cabling and installation, in addition to a saving in maintenance in the future.
By combining the power and water outlets with the lighting columns the costs and visual disruption of additional columns was removed.
