IceSheffield, the ice rink operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV), has reported a surge in attendance since the new year.

SIV has reported that visitor figures are up more than 30 per cent on the same period in 2005.

Peter Morrissey, ice development manager at iceSheffield, said: "Over the last few months we have seen a phenomenal rise in the number of novice skaters visiting iceSheffield.

"The Winter Olympics and the Dancing on Ice TV show, in particular, have really made ice skating very popular with people of all ages. We have been full to capacity with young, aspiring skaters during the half term weeks and our Learn to Skate programme is also attracting many adult skaters.

"The increase in levels of television coverage has helped to bring ice skating much more into the public eye and it is fantastic to see so many new people being inspired to have a go on the rink."

IceSheffield's Learn to Skate programme is currently fully booked with more than 800 people, including 150 adults, practising their skating skills under the guidance of professional coaches. Details: www.icesheffield.com
