case study: IndigoFitness overhaul functional area for Feelfit Gym
Feelfit Gym in Cowley, Oxford, is the city's largest gym. They took advantage of the lockdown period to renovate and refresh.

Feelfit’s functional area was dated and uninspiring, with a standalone rig, separate storage units and worn-out track. Being near the entrance it was a valuable space but, was underused by members and did not provide the club with the engagement or ‘wow factor’ they thought it deserved.

Their brief was to create a functional training and group class area that would provide a strong first impression, acting as a selling point when recruiting new members, and providing inspiration for both trainers and members alike. They also wanted to find a way to make the space feel separate from the rest of the gym.

Their original plan was to install a partition wall, however we saw an opportunity to incorporate this into the design of the equipment. We proposed using the rig / storage system to create the divide, because as well as allowing the space to feel more open, it would derive a functional benefit of additional storage space and enable us to incorporate training equipment along it.

Having our own design team and manufacturing facility allows us to provide bespoke solutions that really are designed specifically to fit in the space available, and work with it in terms of maximizing functionality. The training rig we designed highlights this principle – it covers the full length of the space with legs that are at the perimeter of the room, maximizing floor space.

Underneath the rig is a large turf area, marked out to match the various training areas, and make programming for classes much easier.

This functional space goes above and beyond the original brief provided by the customer and truly does provide a ‘wow factor’ for anyone entering the gym. Most importantly we have created an incredible training space that truly demonstrates what custom designed and manufactured equipment can achieve, with benefits delivered for Feelfit’s owners, their members, and their personal trainers.
case study: Weetwood Hall Hotel
Weetwood Hall Hotel hosts many professional sports teams and athletes who utilise the hotel for training camps. However, the hotel did not have a strength and conditioning facility on site, requiring athletes to travel to a local health club for specialist sessions.

So, the brief given to Indigo by hotel GM Steve Kershaw was to convert a conference room into a high-performance strength and conditioning space, able to cater for anything up to 12 to 15 athletes at a time.

Following initial discussions, we designed an initial layout, producing 3D drawings and a walkthrough video, which allowed Steve to really visualise how the training space would look. The biggest challenge was to achieve the functionality required in the limited space available. To overcome this, we designed a bespoke unit that combined two half racks and three storage bays, that would fit along one wall. Doing this created space in the rest of the gym for additional training options, such as cardio equipment.

It was vital that the flooring would be suitable for both Olympic lifting and functional training, whilst reducing the spread of sound and vibration to neighbouring rooms. Because of this there was only one choice, 32mm DuraTRAIN tiles, which we paired with branded inset lifting platforms. This provided a seamless finish to the floor and removed the need for additional lifting platforms.

Wherever possible, we incorporated the Weetwood hall logo and colour scheme, which extended to the storage system, racks, benches, and lifting platforms – helping the gym to incorporate the strong identity of the hotel.

Following the installation Weetwood Hall GM Steve Kershaw commented: “Indigo’s knowledge and experience has been utilised to maximise what we have, which now allows us to go out to market and attract more teams. It’s been a really simple process from start to finish, and shows what you can achieve with good planning and design.”

In for 2024: Gym Design Trends
Ready to get ahead of the curve?

The dynamic landscape of the health and fitness industry is ever-evolving. Staying ahead of the curve is crucial for gym owners and operators looking to provide valuable customer experiences and unlock opportunities.

So what’s ‘in’ for 2024? IndigoFitness predict an even bigger shift towards recovery on the gym floor.

Let's unpack the gym design trends that promise to reshape training spaces and inspire your business strategy in 2024.

Here are the gym design trends the IndigoFitness team expect to see evolving the gym space in 2024:

#1: Recovery Takes Centre Stage

Consider this: where do your clients recover after their workout? Are they in the way? Do they jump straight in the car? Or do you offer a designated recovery space within your facility?

In 2024, the fitness landscape is evolving to meet the holistic needs of individuals who seek not only intense training sessions but a lifestyle approach to wellness. Recognising recovery as an integral aspect of the training space is key to unlocking your clients' full potential, enhancing performance, and minimising the risk of injuries.

"WORK + REST = SUCCESS"

To stand out in this dynamic era, anticipate a surge in brands and facilities dedicating more of the gym floor specifically for recovery. It goes beyond the basic offerings of stretching mats, foam rollers, and lacrosse balls. Picture an environment where recovery is elevated with state-of-the-art services, ranging from red light therapy to compression treatments and cold therapy.

The challenge is not just about providing recovery options but ensuring your members choose to recover within your gym rather than seeking comprehensive wellness suites elsewhere.

Anticipate a shift as operators and independent gyms adopt strategic recovery approaches aimed at enhancing overall performance and health. It's about creating a training space that goes beyond short-term results, attracting a steady stream of consumers committed to long-term well-being.

FYI: IndigoFitness recently released a white paper exploring the transformative role of recovery in the fitness industry. You can download the white paper here.

#2: OPTIMISE YOUR STUDIO

Across the UK, millions are joining group sessions not only for a good workout but to acquire new skills and forge connections. Is your studio as flexible as it could be?
Enhance the full potential of your studio space by addressing the challenge of incorporating different types of equipment. The dilemma often lies with space efficiency, hindering the creation of a schedule packed with diverse classes. Enter IndigoFitness.

IndigoFitness create flexible studio spaces that transition between strength, HIIT, combat, cycle, yoga, and every conceivable revenue-generating class—all within one adaptable environment.

In the pursuit of studio optimisation in 2024, don’t just offer a workout but an immersive experience. Let your studio be the focal point of diversity, attracting members with a range of preferences.

FYI: IndigoFitness have already started to design and successfully implement multi-use gym studio class concepts with Les Mills and Bannatyne. Do you want to bring a new level of excitement and experience to your classes? Book a free design consultation today.

#3: INCLUDE HYBRID TRAINING

Hybrid training is not just a combination of exercises. It’s a strength and endurance training method for performance results. Hybrid training aims to create a well-rounded athletic ability.

The momentum behind hybrid training can be attributed to influences like CrossFit and HYROX. The variety and challenges keep workouts engaging, stimulating, and mentally rewarding.

The combinations of cardio and strength exercises within a single workout mean the traditional gym floor layout is not practical for a seamless workout.

In your gym design strategy for 2024, consider layouts that can deliver sessions tailored to training for these events and handle the demands of hybrid training. We aim to create modern training spaces that seamlessly transition between strength, cardiovascular, and gymnastics movements. Adopt an environment that delivers the diversity of hybrid training, providing fitness enthusiasts with a well-rounded and time-effective workout experience.

As hybrid training positions itself as a fitness fundamental, your gym design layout in 2024 will be significant in supporting this approach.

FYI: IndigoFitness have recently implemented on gym floor ‘hybrid training areas in Third Space Wimbledon and Just Fitness by Bannatyne. Need help applying this method onto your gym floor? Book a free design consultation.

#4: STAND OUT THROUGH PERSONALISATION

There are currently 3.6 million photos on Instagram with the hashtag #gymselfie. Your future members are drawn to visually appealing spaces

Creating a distinctive and appealing training space is essential for attracting and retaining clients.

Raise your gym’s brand identity through bespoke gym design solutions. From choosing the colour of your gym flooring to deciding how frequently your logo appears across gym equipment. It’s all about curating an environment that reflects the essence of your brand.

In your gym design strategy for 2024, raise your gym’s brand identity with custom designs, creating a unique and memorable space.

The personal touch could significantly strengthen your brand reach.

FYI: IndigoFitness manufacture in the UK, this allows them to design and build exactly to your specification. Your brand, your way! Download our gym personalisation guide to find out more.
