case study: Clare Stobart, founder of CPASE
When Clare Stobart was developing the concept for her boutique health club, she had a strong guiding vision: to provide the best member experience of any boutique club in the UK.

The result is CPASE (Clare’s Space Boutique Health Club – pronounced ‘space’), an adult-only, five-star boutique health club in the Cheshire countryside, which opened on 1 October.

The club, which features pumped oxygen-enriched air, has a 500sq m gym, studios, a spa and casual dining offerings, as well as a crane and tube slide for interval training with a twist.

The club has a functional training area, cardio zone, free weight and dedicated strength space, as well as a dedicated female training zone, while a team of PTs offer one-to-one training and meal planning.

The gym floor is equipped with strength and cardio kit from Technogym’s Artis range which integrates with the Mywellness app, so members can access personalised training programmes, move freely between equipment and track and log their workout data using the Mywellness Band.

“For members, this set-up provides everything in one place – from class bookings and challenges in the gym, to programmes to follow, says Stobart. “For our team, the platform pairs with the equipment on the gym floor and in our studios, and enables members to access our facilities through the speed lane, access lockers and use the Tanita body analysis machine.

“It also helps us see how members are using the club and gives us data so we can personalise their experience even further,” she explains.

case study: World Class
As University of Stirling’s vice chancellor, Professor Sir Gerry McCormac says: “sport is part of the university’s DNA”. When the university invested in a £20m upgrade of its sport and fitness facilities, the vision was clear: to engage as many students, staff, and members of the community as possible in sport and physical activity at the level of their choosing.

Cathy Gallagher, executive director of sport, tells us how the new facilities are communicating the university’s ambition within the 335 acre campus and beyond.

“We always want to set standards,” she says. “After winning UK Sports University of the Year in 2020, we didn’t rest on our laurels – our investment in new facilities shows our commitment to performance sport and physical wellbeing.”

University of Stirling is one of the first higher education settings in the UK to invest in Technogym’s Excite Live line.

“This amazing kit blows my mind!” says Gallagher. “It offers phenomenal technological advancements, with beautiful architecture and aesthetics and the kit is very slimline, helping us make better use of space and cater for more members.”

Technogym Excite Live helps the university deliver on its ambition to engage more of its student population.

“Excite Live’s level of sophistication and functionality aligns with the language we use in programme development and delivery,” says Gallagher. “We knew it would help us get more students physically active.”

University of Stirling made the decision to add Technogym Skill Line classes to the gym floor, including Skillbike class, Skillrow class, and Skillrun class.

“We know digital will engage people, but we never want to lose the human aspect of the gym,” explains Gallagher. “Skill Line classes create a buzz on the gym floor. It’s a different dynamic, which engages more people in a new way. Technogym helped us with programming and staff training, so we can offer a compelling member experience.”

“Our goal is to keep people coming back and Technogym’s kit is key to this engagement,” says Gallagher. “People can access their own coach and programming through the equipment, get extra content, and enjoy the benefits of a community.”

case study: Eden One in Dublin
At the end of 2018, I was standing outside Number One Ballsbridge in Dublin,” explains industry veteran Charlie Bourne. “The venue was already home to high-end apartments, retail and businesses. It took me less than 30 seconds to agree to develop a health club. I wanted to do something different and create a first – not just in Ireland but anywhere.”

Eden One has 7,500sq ft of gym space, with Technogym cardio and resistance kit, including Artis and Skill Line.

“The gym is equipped so people have a complete choice of workout equipment,” says Bourne. “The gym floor has also been designed so our trainers can host small group classes.”

Connectivity via Technogym’s mywellness cloud means Eden One can take a member from biometric testing to programming and PT in one seamless journey.

“The mywellness app is a useful tool for providing a seamless member journey with valuable extras,” explains Bourne. “We can run everything from onboarding to assessment and programming via the app, and we’d eventually like 100 per cent member uptake of the technology.”

“The Technogym brand is very design-led, so the aesthetic fits with our vision,” says Bourne. “The kit is innovative, while also being intuitive enough to be used by complete beginners. We’re delighted to have wall-to-wall Technogym equipment on our gym floor and in all our studios.”

Skillup targets the entire body with focus on upper body muscles
Technogym has released Skillup, an ergometer designed to target the entire body, with a focus on the muscle groups of the upper back, chest and arms, by simulating the actions of cross country skiing.

Dual-resistance Multidrive Technology allows the machine to combine a cardio workout with a power workout, while a functional, barrier-free design allows Skillup to fit into any space and layout, as well as ensuring easy access for the user.

The display is self-powered by user movement via the use of a rechargeable, non-disposable battery, to limit maintenance.

Connected to the Technogym Ecosystem, Skillup allows users to access content through the Technogym app – including a variety of workouts – and the ability to track and display results to monitor progress.

DESIGN TO MOVE exhibition celebrates 40 years of Technogym with 40 unique creations by 40 designers
At 2024 Milan Design Week, Technogym celebrated its 40 years with the special exhibition "Design to Move”, featuring 40 unique Technogym Benches – one of the brand's iconic products – designed by 40 different international designers and artists from all over the world.

The exhibition explored the special and deep relation between design and wellness, style and functionality, emotional and tangible, that has always represented a key element of Technogym since its inception.

Nerio Alessandri, at 22 years old, founded Technogym in his family garage by combining his passion for technology and design (TECHNO) with his passion for exercise (GYM).

Over the years, the brand has evolved from a fitness equipment company into a comprehensive ecosystem of wellness lifestyle and a protagonist of Italian design.

Using Technogym Bench as a blank canvas, “Design to Move” featured the unique creations of Patricia Urquiola, Antonio Citterio, Nendo, Walter De Silva e Mario Antonioli, Elena Salmistraro, Kelly Hoppen, Michele Bönan, Rolf Sachs, Piero Lissoni, Nerio Alessandri, Tiffany Lovage, Giorgia Apreia, Gustavo Martini, Ludovica Messina, Malika Novi Dzhamaldaeva, Mariana Prestes, Yuetong Shi, Renin Bilginer, Univers Uchronia, Anaïs Coulon, Iwan Suastika, Wilson Ng, Myles Igwebuike, Tosin Tòròmádé, Osiris Hertman, Kate Constantine, Karen Chan, Alek. O., Santo Tolone, Riccardo Beretta, Andrea Sala, Shafei Xia, Objects of Common Interest, Piotr Makowski, Beatrice Alici, Elisa Ceccoli, Maria Violato, Egal Marcelo Zuniga Argandona, Jana Mosconi, Gabriele Carrera, Alberto Bay and Anna Bonomi.

The special project was visually planned and conceived together with acclaimed architect and designer Giulio Cappellini and curated by Bruna Roccasalva – who gathered 40 artists and designers from around the world and inspired them to interpret the concept of wellness through their individual artistic and cultural lenses.

The inauguration on Monday 15 April, coincided with celebrations for the Made in Italy day, established by the Italian Government on the occasion of the anniversary of the birth of Leonardo da Vinci.

“As Leonardo taught us, movement is the cause of all forms of life. In the last 40 years we have been working every day to help people live a better life thanks to wellness. Design has always been a key element of our journey, a strong ally to turn functional into emotional and needs into aspiration. We are proud that so many designers and artists have joined our dream of putting the world back in motion,” declared Nerio Alessandri, Technogym Founder and CEO.

A selection of 15 unique Technogym Benches will be auctioned in collaboration with Sotheby’s, in September 2024. The further 25 Technogym Benches will be available for purchase on Technogym.com. All proceeds from both the auction and e-shop will be donated to Unicef.

Let’s Move For a Better World: make a difference! Join the movement!
Technogym’s social challenge ‘Let’s Move for a Better World, which first began in 2014, enabling people to do good for themselves and make a difference for others, is back!

Technogym has long been proposing physical activity as a means of prevention and cure for the health of the population. The answer to a sedentary life is an active life, a wellness life.

The driving force behind the wellness philosophy is certainly physical exercise, but not only physical exercise.

The social campaign leverages Technogym’s technology and connected ecosystem to motivate people to move more and more regularly and to join their local fitness facilities (clubs, hotels, workplaces, universities and more) and share their results with the global Technogym community.

From 12th to 27th March 2024, thousands of people from around the world will join forces to “donate” their exercise and promote the Wellness lifestyle through a challenge based on MOVEs (Technogym’s unit of measure for movement). Movement Is the foundation of an active life, people should aim for 1000 MOVEs/day to be healthy.

In facilities, users can join Let’s Move for a Better World connecting to the Technogym Ecosystem, tracking their workouts, and collecting MOVEs. Upon reaching predefined targets, each facility can win Technogym products to donate to a non-profit association or educational institutions of its choice. The more active gym-members are, the more MOVEs they collect and the bigger the donation will be to each community.

In 2023, Glasgow Club Tollcross finished in first position on the UK leaderboard, with 2million MOVEs, out of 230 participating UK facilities, engaging more than 450 Glasgow Club members who came together to donate their MOVEs to win Technogym equipment for Active Glasgow East Community Sports Hub, a programme through sport Scotland’s ‘Club and Communities’ strand, the Community Sport Hub (CSH) that aims to bring sport, physical activity and local partners together supported by investment received from The National Lottery to improve access to local activity provision.

Glasgow Club Tollcross (and 14 other Glasgow Club facilities) will be joined again this year by over 230 facilities in the UK alone, including previous leaderboard toppers and long serving participants Crow Wood Leisure, amongst other businesses from all sectors throughout the UK, such as CPASE and Cadbury House and several Universities from London South Bank to Glasgow, to name just a few.

Alongside its important social message, Technogym's global campaign represents a very powerful tool for facilities to become ambassadors of the Wellness Lifestyle and give a concrete contribution to their local community. Among the promotional activities during previous editions of the Let’s Move for a Better World campaign, facilities engaged their communities through special events, competitions, and classes to boost loyalty, motivation, and attendance with thousands of people sharing their results and Inspiring others through the social media hashtag: #letsmoveforabetterworld

Technogym has been investing for years in building its Technogym Ecosystem with the objective of growing the industry, making it more attractive to end users. The Let’s Move for a Better World Campaign is a concrete example of how to combine a unique consumer activation with a marketing campaign for a facility and a community social activation. The Technogym Ecosystem includes connected equipment, apps and on-demand video training content and can connect individual users to their own personalised training experience for fitness, sport or health anytime and anywhere.

Let's Move for a Better World is the result of Technogym's forty-year commitment to promoting wellness around the world. The campaign represents an opportunity to create a more sustainable society, based on personal health, and the education of younger generations is a fundamental starting point for the achievement of the common goal.

Technogym Ecosystem: the one and only AI-based end-to-end open platform
It’s since the early 1980s – when it was founded by 22-year-old Nerio Alessandri in his family’s garage – that Technogym has set the gold standard in the wellness sector. The ideation of the one-of-a-kind Hack Squat machine in 1983 paved the way for a long series of constant innovations, such as the launch of Wellness System – the first software in the industry – in 1996, the first online equipment in 2007, the first cloud platform in 2012 and the one and only Technogym Ecosystem today (see in-depth section at end of article).

Technogym's unique AI-based Ecosystem: a blueprint for innovation

Over the years Technogym has developed a unique ecosystem made of connected smart equipment, software, apps, artificial intelligence, on-demand exercise content and tech services. This allows end-users to live a frictionless experience fully personalized on their goals, passions and aspirations and operators to manage their business, improve the customer journey and its personalization, while accelerating attraction, retention and secondary spend.

This is why Technogym has become the reference point for club owners, hotels, fitness enthusiasts, elite sportspeople, physiotherapists, and medical centres. Technogym Ecosystem enables operators to personalize every aspect of a member’s gym experience, from assessment to program customization and follow-up, improving member’s experiences and increasing ROI thanks to the surge in the attraction rate, retention (+20%), upselling and secondary spend (+100%). Moreover AI-based Technogym Ecosystem Coach adjusts training programs to enhance engagement and maximize results and supports marketing efforts
through advanced profiling, allowing operators to run loyalty campaigns.

Technogym Ecosystem makes up an open platform that seamlessly integrates software applications already in use in the club (membership software, marketing platforms, body analysis and assessment devices), fitness equipment (from any manufacturer), payment methods (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe, Visa, Mastercard and others) and members’ consumer apps and wearable devices, to provide fitness, health, and sport enthusiasts with fluid and hyper-personalized training experiences. At the same time, for those operators willing to offer their member a premium and fully seamless experience, Technogym is the only
brand in the industry that allows the collection and tracking of cohesive and consistent data for a 360-degree profiling, thanks to its unique blend of in-house equipment (cardio, strength and functional) and digital platforming: one brand, one ecosystem.

Best-in-class profiling, personalisation and engagement

Technogym Ecosystem embodies a multi-touchpoint powerhouse for a truly fluid experience: through Technogym App, users can easily access Technogym Ecosystem, keeping the training experience smooth, seamless, and always customized in every detail. This is also possible thanks to the connection and integration between Technogym Ecosystem and external apps, wearables, and trackers, such as Strava, Runkeeper, Apple, Garmin, Polar, Fitbit and many others: train anywhere, anytime.

The brand-new Technogym Checkup – native to Technogym Ecosystem and launching at IHRSA 2024 – makes up the ultimate access point to Technogym Ecosystem. Thanks to Technogym Checkup and its artificial intelligence, users can start their personalized and targeted training programmes based on their individual physical and functional parameters, track their improvements along the way, and get adapted training protocols over time. This innovative AI-based assessment station is the way to personalize each single training programme: Technogym Checkup scans body composition, analyses strength performances (from activities on strength machines within Technogym Ecosystem), balance, mobility and cognitive abilities. Then, it combines all data in the Wellness Age metric and Technogym Coach – the Artificial Intelligence unifying the whole ecosystem – prescribes effective training protocols that adapt over time.

This way, Technogym Coach also follows the training evolution and enables a precise clustering of club users based on workout preferences, habits, patterns (training typology, preferred weekdays, average session duration etc.). Leveraging such data, operators can boost retention and upselling delivering effective and targeted communications, promotions, as well as friendly competition through challenges. At the same time, Technogym Ecosystem allows clubs to deliver facility-produced training content to the customers’ homes via live streams and on-demand video, for a hybrid model.

Thanks to Technogym Ecosystem and its AI, there’s no hassle for club owners and managers: the user mapping is multidimensional and capillary, and results in the possibility of delivering marketing campaigns fully customized on both operators and users. Through Technogym’s Mywellness CRM management software, operators can tailor and communicate campaigns and challenges based on workout type, specific metrics (distance, calories etc.), create classes and more. Technogym’s open platform is also compatible with more than 140 membership management software solutions in more than 30 countries to easily synchronize membership data and ensure continuity. Technogym’s digital expertise provides the right service for the right client, at the right time.

No hassle for operators, no hassle for users. Thanks to AI, Technogym’s smart equipment and app adapt and guides customers: after logging in via the app, the system recognizes profile, past sessions, preferred goals, tracking and storing all improvements. Strength equipment automatically adapts metrics such as load, range of motion, correct posture, speed of execution, number of sets, repetitions, and optimal recovery times. The built-in interface also comes with a variety of different modes and graphics depending on the training session, all stimulating motivation and accomplishments through gamification.

Over 30 years of innovation milestones

Highlighting Technogym’s pioneering spirit, it’s worth mentioning just a few of its groundbreaking technological milestones over the years, that established it as the first in the fitness technology market:

- 1992: the CPR (Constant Pulse Rate) system, a scientific algorithm through which training intensity on cardio products was determined by the user’s heart rate

- 1996: Wellness System, the world’s first-ever solution to track and store every of the user’s activities within a club through a user-specific key to be inserted into each machine

- 2007: the first online-connected equipment, which revolutionized how individuals approached their workouts and laid the foundation for a new era of interactive and connected
fitness experiences

- 2012: Mywellness, the first digital cloud born to help operators manage their business, improve the customer experience, and accelerate attraction, retention and secondary spend

- 2013: Unity, the most advanced, built-in user console in the market back then, featuring tailored content, virtual training and entertainment options through Internet, TV, games

- 2020: Technogym Live, the ultimate evolution of Unity, allowing users to choose their preferred training experience from the library of on-demand video workouts, including trainer-led sessions, goal-specific routines, immersive virtual outdoor workouts, that adapt to users’ speed and adjust the incline according to the chosen route, as well as endless entertainment options (Netflix, YouTube, TV, social media)

- 2021: Technogym App, the first-hand and essential touchpoint to allow users to easily access Technogym Ecosystem anywhere, anytime, keeping the training experience fluid, seamless and always customized in every detail

...and many more to come to elevate fitness experiences.
