US$6.5m indoor complex set for Cleveland
A new US$6.5m (£4.1m, €4.7m) indoor sports complex could be developed on a 9-acre (3.6-hectare) site in Cleveland, Ohio, US, under plans announced by a local non-profit organisation.
Fast Track Cycling (FTC) has secured a real estate purchase option with the City of Cleveland for the construction of the 150,000 sq ft (13,935m) facility, which will boast a 250m wood cycling track and 75,000sq ft (6,968sq m) of turf playing field. Plans also feature 20,000sq ft (1,858sq m) of sports court space as part of efforts to accommodate a range of sports in addition to cycling, such as soccer, athletics, baseball, volleyball, basketball and walking.
Engineers GPD Associates and architects Vocon Partners are working alongside FTC on the scheme, which has already received a US$30,000 (£18,829, €21,558) grant from Civic Innovation Lab and other donations totalling US$7,000 (£4,393, €5,029). Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson said: "The sale and use of this vacant city land bank property for a sports/Olympic-style cycling training centre is a welcomed economic opportunity and major boost for Cleveland's Slavic Village neighbourhood.
"With the makings of both a regional and national draw, the proposed cycling centre will cast a new light on Slavic Village by generating a sense of pride with benefits that will include job creation, business opportunities, health benefits, and more."
