New name for Australian fitness body
Kinect Australia has announced the launch of its new name - Physical Activity Australia - as part of its "ambitious new vision" to promote regular exercise across the country.
The independent, not-for-profit organisation was first established in 1982 and is the national registration body for professionals within the Australian health and fitness industry.
It is hoped the name change will support Physical Activity Australia's focus on policies and initiatives that are designed to encourage physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour.
According to chief executive officer Fiona K Bailey, there will be no changes to its national fitness registration and programme accreditation schemes following the rebranding.
Bailey said: "We want to make it easier for Australians to be physically active. This includes changing the thinking, attitudes and way we operate as a society. Simple public education messages around regular exercise have been tried for years and are not enough.
"Changing policy and practice across society is likely to be the most powerful and cost effective mechanism to address the obesity and chronic disease epidemics and support prevention strategies."
