Bespoke cycling hotel for Japan
A hotel dedicated to cyclists has opened in Onomichi – a coastal city in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan – allowing guests to check in while still on their bikes.
Masterminded by Suppose Design Office, this new hotel is the first of its kind in Japan.
Constructed in a renovated warehouse along the Onomichi waterfront, ‘Hotel Cycle’ offers guests a five-star experience for their bikes, and a chance to relax and unwind as well.
As well as being able to literally check in on a bike, all guest bedrooms have bike racks – displaying the guests' mode of transport as a piece of art and keeping it secure. The public areas offer airy repair spaces with tools available for rent and there’s specialist bike shop, bar and restaurant on site as well.
The interior spaces reflect the building's industrial past
Hotel Cycle provides 28 suites, split over two floors, and the overall interior design has an industrial feel, giving a nod to the buildings previous use. Speaking to Dezeen, the architects from Studio Design Office commented: "Our building materials – wood, mortar, and steel – recall the old houses of Onomichi and the shipbuilding that's been such a longstanding tradition there."
As cycling is a major part of the tourist industry in Onomichi city, Hotel Cycle looks set to pedal visiting up to a new level. The Onomichi U2 development is the latest project to be be completed by Studio Design Office, which aims to offer ‘Cycle, Travel and Good Things’.
