Wellington sports centre gets green light
A NZ$46m (£17.7m, 20m euro) Indoor Community Sports Centre will be built in Wellington, New Zealand, following the resolution of a long-running dispute over the preferred site.
The 12-court facility will measure 10,500sq m (113,000sq ft), with the potential to increase capacity by a further three courts in the future. It will also offer seating for 1,000 spectators, meeting and social spaces, and changing facilities.
An independent review recommended that the Cobham Park site be chosen ahead of the Harbour Quays site opposite the existing Westpac Stadium in order to reduce costs and eliminate any potential conflict with regular events already being held at the stadium.
Sir John Anderson, who carried out the independent review on behalf of Wellington City Council, said: "This review has been a thorough and rigorous process. It has taken nearly five weeks and I am certain we have resolved the issue of the best location for Wellington's Indoor Community Sports Centre."
The facility is scheduled to open in September 2010.
