£7.4m redevelopment planned for Wyre leisure centres
Wyre Borough Council (WBC) is due to consider proposals to invest £7.4m in improving the borough's leisure centres.
The plans follow a comprehensive review of leisure provision, which recommended wide-ranging improvements to three centres - Thornton, Poulton and Garstang.
Thornton Leisure Centre is set to receive a £3.4m overhaul, including the addition of an extreme sports facility for young people and upgrade fitness and dance facilities.
At Poulton Leisure Centre, a £1.7m redesign would include a luxury day spa facility with additional studio space for community use.
Meanwhile, Garstang Leisure Centre has been earmarked to receive a £2.3m upgrade - including the integration of a new swimming pool.
The WBC cabinet will discuss the proposals at a meeting on 12 September. If approved, they will be subject to a public consultation.
Councillor Lynne Bowen, cabinet member with responsibility for sport and leisure, said: "Despite reports to the contrary, none of Wyre's leisure centres are going to close. We've said all along that this is not a cost-cutting exercise,
"We recognise the need to spend in order to save in the long run. By investing now, we hope to increase participation numbers in the future, which will in turn reduce the cost of running the service or indeed turn it into a profitable enterprise. This is essential as we prepare for continuing reductions in government funding."
"it's about exploring the best ways to deliver a high quality, cost efficient service that meets the needs of our communities."
