$125m Guthrie Theater opens on the banks of the Mississippi
The new US$125m (£68m, 98m euro) Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, opened on 25 June.
The 285,000sq ft (26,480sq m) new building, which sits on the banks of the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis, replaces the Guthrie’s old home at Vineyard Place.
The Guthrie features three theatres – the 1,100-seat Wurtele Thrust Stage, the 700-seat McGuire Proscenium Stage and the 200-seat Dowling Studio.
The complex also includes rehearsal rooms, classrooms, administrative offices, production and support facilities, restaurants, bars and parking.
The theatre was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel of Ateliers Jean Nouvel and represents his first completed project in the US.
The Guthrie Theater was originally founded in 1963 by British theatrical director Sir Tyrone Guthrie and concentrates on producing works of literature as opposed to the more commercial fare seen on Broadway. Details: www.guthrietheater.org
