Virgin Active is to invest £2m in upgrading its latest opening at Broadway Plaza, Birmingham.

The 4,000sq m (42,400sq ft) club was acquired from Esporta in July, along with 12 other sites.

The club will benefit from an additional 1,300sq m (14,000sq ft) of gym space, which will be created on the currently vacant second floor of the building.

There will also be a new group cycling studio, a boxing ring, a café/bar area and a library.

The club will remain open during the work, which is scheduled for completion in autumn 2006.

The other former Esporta sites – which were acquired for an undisclosed sum – are also expected to receive similar refurbishments.
