AS+GG nab contract to design athletics-inspired tower in Hong Kong
Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) have won a competition to create a new "sculptural icon" in Shenzhen, Hong Kong.
Described by the architects as an "anthropomorphic" structure, the Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Centre (SHKIC) is designed to symbolise the agon or competitive struggle endured by high-performance athletes.
Rising 700 metres high, the skyscraper will feature several leisure and hospitality facilities, including an observation deck, restaurant, nightclub, spa, swimming pool, and a number of gardens and open spaces.
The SHKIC will reportedly also include a performance hall as well as centres dedicated to technological innovation and entrepreneurialism.
In a statement, AS+GG said the project would be the "centrepiece" of their Shenzhen Longgang Master Plan – a mixed-use district which is being developed by Shimao Group.
The property will comprise a five-star hotel and offices, as well as retail and dining outlets.
"The master plan," commented the firm, "integrates a dynamic new public realm that combines cultural and retail programs anchored by a cultural centre and a main library."
A timescale for the project has not yet been announced.
