Airshow Ready for take-off

06 Jul 2007

The National Museum of Flight is anticipating record crowds for its annual airshow on 28 July at East Fortune in East Lothian.

The event is set to feature a breathtaking line-up of aircraft and events including a debut appearance by one of the most powerful helicopters in the world, a twin rotar Chinook. Also in the air will be a £50m Eurofighter Typhoon, Lynx helicopter and veteran Second World War aircraft including a Catalina Seaplane, Spitfire, Hurricane and a Lancaster bomber.

Displays of aerobatic skill by the Red Arrows and The Blades (who flew over Victoria and David Beckham’s world cup party last year), a parachute squad from the RAF Falcons and the world’s only formation wing walking team, Team Guinot, will add to the spectacle of the day.

Amanda Jopling, general manager at the National Museum of Flight said: “We have been very lucky to secure a Chinook helicopter. They are like gold dust at the moment as they are currently being used in active service in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is a huge twin-rotar craft, the biggest helicopter by far that we have ever had at our show.”

The attractions on the day are not restricted to the sky. On the ground events will include ground displays from the Golden Lions Parachute team, military vehicles, mountain bike demonstrations and the chance to climb into cockpits, as well as a special children’s zone with science shows and workshops from the Glasgow Science Centre.

Families can also enjoy access to the hangars at the museum that showcase some of the country’s finest aircraft exhibits. Food and beverage stands plus craft, gadget and memorabilia stalls will also be available.

Ray Thilthorpe, a former pilot with the Red Arrows and the Airshow’s flight director said: “We’re shaping up for the biggest and best show we’ve ever hosted at The National Museum of Flight. We still have some spaces to fill and will be a fantastic experience for everyone who attends.”

The airshow aims to offer a great day out for flight enthusiasts and families alike and the Museum’s permanent star attraction, Concorde, will also be open for visits on the day with a limited number of boarding passes available on a first come first served basis.
