Approval sought for Bristol Museum plans

By Helen Patenall    12 Nov 2007

Bristol City Council hopes to get the go-ahead this week for its new Museum of Bristol project.

The cabinet has already endorsed the exhibition master plan and must now decide on whether to agree to a revised budget of £24.7m.

Additional planning issues to meet authorisation include discussion on proposed corporate hire facilities; a café; education rooms; a shop; foyer areas; a temporary exhibition gallery; sustainability and workshops.

“The new Museum of Bristol is a key project for this city and has featured in successive City Council Corporate Plans as a crucial element in the continuing regeneration of Bristol and its cultural provision,” said executive member Rosalie Walker.

“The plan being presented to cabinet is entire and comprehensive. We want to get the quality, the content, the look and the experience of the new museum totally right to provide Bristol with a world class, high-quality museum of its city history that we can all be proud of.

“The revised budget reflects the entirety of the final plans and our pragmatic approach to getting the renovation and fitting process right.”

If approved, work on site could start in January.

The museum is being funded by Bristol City Council, a grant of £11.2m from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the MLA and Renaissance South West.

Bob Sharpe, chief executive of Museums, Libraries and Archives (MLA) South West, said: “Millions of pounds have been invested in supporting and revitalising Bristol’s museums in recent years through MLA’s Renaissance programme.

“The development of the Museum of Bristol is a shining example of the dramatic difference that funding is making in the South West. Exciting, inspiring and innovative new projects like this have helped ensure that Renaissance will continue for a further three years.”
