US$400m arena in the works for Arizona NHL franchise
Arizona Coyotes, the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise, has unveiled plans to build a new arena in partnership with Arizona State University.
If given the green light, the 16,200-capacity facility will be built on a 58-acre piece of land within the university’s Athletic Facilities District.
In addition to the main rink, which will be constructed for the Coyotes, a second sheet of ice will be developed for Arizona State, youth hockey teams and community events. A hotel is also expected to be built on the site.
Andrew Barroway, majority owner and chair of the Coyotes, said the franchise would contribute half of the expected US$400m (£322, €373.8m) outlay. He revealed that he was looking for public funding to make-up the balance.
“We want something that people are proud of and that people want to go in to, in a location that is ideal and centrally situated for a lot of our fans,” he said.
“We’re going to build it so it’s also a destination where people might actually want to go ad hang out in that area, even when there’s not a game. This is going to be more than just one sleek beautiful stadium. It’s going to be a whole development.”
All being well, construction is expected to begin next summer, and completed in time for the start of the 2019/20 season.
