Australia's Scenic World launches railway ride after AUS$30m revamp

By Aoife Dowling    25 Apr 2013

Scenic World at Katoomba in New South Wales, Australia has unveiled its Scenic Railway ride following a AUS$30m (US$31m, €24m, £20m) redevlopment.

The ride, which includes a descent into the Blue Mountains rainforest, now features a new train with four Swiss designed carriages that allow passengers to choose their own adventure by adjusting their seat up to 20 degrees. This feature aims to challenge the adventurous passengers and accommodating those seeking a more 'laid back' journey.

The ride features an incline of 52 degrees, which can now be taken between 44 and 64 degrees down into the Jamison Valley.

The new experience in the enclosed glass roofed red carriages allows passengers to experience expanded views of the rainforest setting and Jamison Valley backdrop.

The redevelopment also includes a refurbished track, a new winch system and RFID technology wristbands replacing tickets.

Scenic World's joint managing directors Anthea Hammon and her brother David Hammon said: "This redevelopment continues to honour the same depth of historical, cultural and environmental respect that our family has provided for three generations, but offers the visitor a new perspective which connects our visitors with a unique rainforest experience."

The new train will be the fifth since the Hammons' grandfather Harry took over the mining lease in 1945 and converted the coal railway into a tourist attraction.

The train travels 310m through a cliff side tunnel and through the ancient rainforest taking 84 passengers every 10 minutes.
