Breaking Bad best for business in Albuquerque
Despite the ending of hit TV show Breaking Bad, tourism is still booming in New Mexico thanks to the global phenomenon.
The town of Albuquerque, New Mexico has seen a spike in new business brought into the area mostly thanks to the TV series, in which a terminally ill school teacher is forced to cook crystal meth to support his family.
One shop – The Candy Lady – has created a blue rock sugar that was used as a substitute for methamphetamine in the first two series. Now being sold to the public, 30,000 bags of the crystal meth candy were sold in the space of a year, accounting for a quarter of the store’s yearly sales.
Despite the show’s dark themes, Breaking bad highlighted areas of Albuquerque with fans of the show flocking to visit the area and see the sights.
A city-run website detailing the locations of scenes in the show has received tens of thousands of hits while ‘Biking Bad’ bike tours of the area are also in high demand.
Films and television shows being filmed in an area have proven to boost its revenues through tourism. Harry Potter has proved a boost to areas such as Alnwick Castle, while fans of the TV series Downton Abbey flocked to the wrong location in an effort to see the set of the hit show.
