Plans submitted to turn Drakelow WWII tunnels into museum
Plans have been submitted to turn a Word War II tunnel network and Cold War bunker into a museum in Kidderminster, Worcestershire.
The Drakelow Tunnels network, which covers 285,000 sq ft (26,477sq m), previously housed an underground factory producing aircraft engines and later became a regional seat of government in case of a nuclear attack by Soviet forces.
The plans were submitted to Wyre Forest District Council by the site’s current owners Quercus Ilex SA, with the development potentially being funded by the construction of nearby properties.
It is thought the tunnel network will be used to house the museum, with a museum gift shop and coffee shop based in a visitor centre located next to an area of visitor parking proposed for the potential attraction.
