CA$15m boost for Ryerson University plans
Mattamy Homes founder and chief executive officer Peter Gilgan has contributed CA$15m (£9.4, EUR10.9m, US$14.7m) towards Ryerson University's new sports complex in Toronto, Canada.
The new Peter Gilgan Athletic Centre, which is already under construction, will cover more than 220,000sq ft (20,439sq m) and more than double the university's existing facilities.
A multi-purpose court for basketball and volleyball; a fitness centre; studios; and a full-size ice rink to be known as the Mattamy Home Ice are proposed as part of the complex.
Facilities will also include a high performance gym and will be available to both students at Ryerson University and the local community. Completion is scheduled for spring 2012.
The facility is being built on the site of the former Maple Leaf Campus, with funding made available by students and the Government of Canada's Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.
Ryerson University president and vice-chancellor Sheldon Levy said: "Peter's wonderful generosity will benefit Ryerson students, our community and our city for years to come."
Gilgan added: "I am delighted to play a part in the transformation of this iconic treasure that not only respects its rich heritage, but also ensures the next generation will enjoy it all over again."
