Camberwell Leisure Centre opens after £6.2m revamp
Camberwell Leisure Centre in Southwark, London has unveiled the final phase of its £6.2m revamp.
The third phase included the redevelopment of Warwick Hall, Jubilee Hall (previously known as the Sports Hall) as well as the creation of Camberwell Youth Centre.
The project was funded by Southwark Council, Youth Capital Fund and various other grants.
The revamp at Jubilee Hall involved building over an old swimming pool, which created 600sq m (6,458sq ft) of open space that will be used for sports, group exercise classes and private functions.
The 200 sq m (2,153sq ft) Warwick Hall saw the removal of the old ceiling to expose a Victorian roof structure. The hall also has a new sprung floor, sound system, improved ventilation and air conditioning, and acoustic improvements.
Camberwell Youth Centre, which was awarded £576,000 from the Youth Capital Fund, is being used as a dedicated area for children and young people. The centre is aimed at 13 to 19 year-olds and will host sessions including dance, music production, creative art as well as an advice and guidance service on fitness and healthy living.
In 2011 Camberwell Leisure Centre reopened its 30-station gym and 25m refurbished and retiled swimming pool and learner pool.
Southwark cabinet member Veronica Ward, said: "I was very pleased to see people enjoying the new spaces and I hope the new, bright and up-to-date facilities encourage more local residents to try out the excellent sport and fitness facilities at the Centre.
"The Hall is part of our Olympic Legacy so I hope many more people will come and see what is on offer"
