Campbell to continue as UK Sport chair
Sue Campbell has been confirmed as the chair of UK Sport for the next four years, following the conclusion of her 18-month tenure as interim (reform) chair of the organisation.
Campbell has made significant changes to the senior team at UK Sport since taking charge in November 2003 with a remit to drive a process of modernisation.
The removal of staff – including chief executive Richard Callicott and head of anti-doping, Michelle Verroken – as well as the implementation of new funding mechanisms for governing bodies which reward only success at the highest levels, have characterised Campbell's tough approach.
This uncompromising attitude has earned the backing of secretary of state, Tessa Jowell who said: “Her huge experience of sport at every level means she is the ideal person to take the organisation forward.”
Campbell, who was selected ahead of English Institute of Sport chair Steve Cram, and Alistair Gray, head of the Scottish Institute of Sport, said: “I am delighted to accept the invitation to take on the chair's role on a formal basis. Our focus is firmly set on working with partners in the world class system to help UK sportsmen and women be the best in the world."
