Canada's new National Sport School opens
Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and WinSport Canada have announced the unveiling of the new National Sport School at Canada Olympic Park (COP) in Alberta.
The institution - developed and operated by CBE and WinSport Canada - has moved from its former home at Ernest Manning High School to the west side of the COP site. Housed in a five-storey tower, it is anticipated that the move will help WinSport Canada in a bid to further centralise resources for athletes as part of the first Canadian Sport Institute.
An individualised academic learning programme and technology will meet the demands of a number of young high-performance athletes training and competing around the world. WinSport Canada president Dan O'Neill said: "Quality and innovative education for student-athletes motivates WinSport Canada's vision for the future.
"Locating the school within the Calgary culture of excellence provides a golden opportunity for these student-athletes to learn from current Olympic and world champions, while pursuing both their sporting dreams and a world-class education." CBE area director Sydney Smith added: "We have created a unique learning opportunity that recognizes the gifts of student athletes and their desire to succeed in the arenas of sports and education."
