Card surcharges face government action
HM Treasury has revealed that the government is to bring forward new legislation to tackle "excessive" card surcharges imposed by firms such as travel and entertainment operators.
It follows recommendations published by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and will lead to a ban on excessive charges across all forms of payment, not just debit cards.
The ban will be implemented across "most retail sectors" and will ensure the UK becomes the first nation to introduce forthcoming European legislation due by the end of the year.
Mark Hoban, financial secretary to the Treasury, said: "[Consumers] have a right to understand the charges they may incur up front and not be hit through a hidden last minute payment surcharge.
"We're leading the way in Europe by stopping this practice. The government remains committed to helping consumers get a good deal in these difficult times."
