The owners of the Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, have appointed John Sisk and Son to rebuild the historic tourist attraction, which was severely damaged by a large fire in July 2008.

Plans for the £34m redevelopment of the 104-year-old pier have been drawn up by Bristol-based architects, Angus Meek, which will include a new pavilion, a 250-seat conference facility, rooftop thrill rides and an 90m (295.3ft) observation tower overlooking the resort. Enabling work to strengthen the pier structure is currently ongoing, but it is now hoped that the Hertfordshire-based construction company will start work on the rebuilding scheme "as soon as possible" to enable the attraction to reopen in June 2010.

Grand Pier co-owner Kerry Michael said: "The Pier is a unique structure and building anything quarter of a mile out to sea is a challenge for any contractor so we've had to be meticulous in our selection. "The aim is to be open at the end of June [2010] but if we have good weather this winter, there is a chance we complete earlier. Conversely, severe weather could still delay the project."

John Sisk and Son managing director, Paul Wilson, added: "Sisk will restore the excitement and grandeur of the historic pier but with 21st century facilities for visitors. We will use our building expertise on what is a major engineering challenge to rebuild the Grand Pier for the important tourist trade in summer 2010."
