Council to shut North Wales outdoor pursuits centre
Powys County Council (PCC) has resolved to shut an outdoor pursuits centre at Llwyngwril, North Wales, as part of its efforts to cut spending by £16m.
Although Gwynedd County Council is the owner of the Grade II-listed Ty Gwyn facility, PCC has maintained and invested in the centre for the past 14 years. A condition survey undertaken by Capita Symonds on behalf of PCC has found that around £200,000 of capital investment will be required to ensure the property is fully weatherproof.
However, a report put before councillors revealed that PCC's leisure and recreation department will not receive any funding for repairs and improvements during 2011-12. The report said: "The leisure and recreation department have been advised that they have been allocated no capital budget in 2011/12 for major repairs and improvements of the 17 buildings for which they are responsible.
"In addition, the department has been asked to identify a 15 per cent reduction in premises costs, and a 10 per cent reduction of staff - 2 per cent on a year on year basis for the next five years." PCC will, however, seek to receive a share of the proceeds from the sale of Ty Gwyn from Gwynedd County Council given its previous investment in the facility.
