Council unveils plans for Leeds gymnastics base
A new gymnastics base could be established at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds under plans being drawn up by the local authority.
Leeds City Council's (LCC) sport and recreation service is proposing to turn the facility's indoor athletics element into a venue available to recreational and elite gymnasts. The City of Leeds Gymnastics Club is currently based at Leeds Metropolitan University's Carnegie sports centre and would take on the running of the new location.
It is expected that the plans would also save Leeds City Council around £300,000 a year in running costs, with British Gymnastics backing the scheme. LCC executive member for leisure Adam Ogilvie said: "While it is important to stress this proposal is at an early stage, this move would help to put Leeds at the forefront of both recreational and elite gymnastics in the country."
