Dejphon Chansiri puts Sheffield Wednesday up for sale

By Tom Walker    20 Dec 2018
Sheffield Wednesday came within one win of being promoted to the Engish Premier League in 2016

Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri has said he's putting Sheffield Wednesday Football Club up for sale.

Chansiri acquired the Championship club in 2015 and since taking over, the club has undergone a tumultuous period.

The club came within one win of being promoted to the English Premier League in 2016, when it reached the Championship Play Off Final.

Since then, however, The Owls have suffered a dip in form and were also placed under a transfer embargo due to falling foul of the English Football League's (EFL) Profitability and Sustainability rules.

Under the EFL's spending rules, clubs are not allowed to post losses in excess of £39m over three years – a system aimed at making competition fairer for clubs which do not have rich benefactors.

During the financial year of 2016-17 alone – the last available financial figures for the club – the club lost more than £20m.

Speaking at a fans' forum, Chansiri said: "I will put this club on the market. I believe many people want to buy."

Chansiri, whose family controls the Thai Union Group – one of the world's largest producer of canned tuna – bought the club from former owner Milan Mandaric.
