Disturbing increase in drownings

By Tim Nash    28 Nov 2007

The 2007 National Drowning Report was released earlier this month and shows that 277 people drowned in Australian waterways in the year to 30 June 2007 – a disturbing 5 per cent increase on the previous year.

Speaking at the launch of the report in Brisbane, George Brandis SC, Federal Minister for Arts and Sport, said: “These results clearly show that we cannot be complacent about drowning and it is why the Coalition Government has committed an additional AUS$17.5m towards water safety over the next four years taking our total commitment to over AUS$30m. This will include the development of the National Water Safety Plan 2008-2011.”

Rob Bradley, CEO of the Royal Life Saving Society Australia and AALARA president elect, added: “This is a very disappointing result.

“Whilst there was a small improvement in the 0-4 age group, 35 infants and toddlers lost their lives tragically through drowning. These preventable drowning deaths have a devastating impact on the families and friends of the children lost.

“We need to continue to remind parents and carers of the importance of Keep Watch. Always supervise in and around the water.”
