FA announces further Wembley woes
The Football Association (FA) has announced that the Wembley Stadium construction project is "significantly behind schedule" and has relocated all sporting fixtures and concerts until the end of the year.
The already strained relationship between contractor, Multiplex and the FA is believed to be at breaking point, as Wembley National Stadium Ltd (WNSL) faces the embarrassing cancellation of a plethora of events, including concerts from Bon Jovi, Take That, Robbie Williams and the Rolling Stones, as well as the FA Community Shield and rugby league Challenge Cup final.
It is anticipated that Multiplex – which is facing penalty payments of around £140,000 a day for the delay and expects losses of up to £180m on the project – may blame changes made by WNSL to the design for the continuing delay.
Sources close to Multiplex and WNSL are suggesting that both sides are gearing up for an acrimonious squabble which may culminate in litigation.
The FA could stand to lose millions in revenue from the relocation or cancellation of the booked events.
