Forum planned to discuss development of sport in Wigan

04 Jun 2007

Wigan Sports Development Unit, part of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, is looking for people to take part in a Sports Forum on 11 June to discuss the development of sport across the borough.

The forum is the start of a consultation process which aims to gather people who are passionate about sport and its ability to unite communities, reduce anti-social behaviour and empower local people.

Rugby League legend Phil Clarke, president of Wigan Borough Sports Council, said: "The people of Wigan and Leigh have a reputation for being passionate about their sport. Our professional and amateur clubs, teams and individuals share a common determination to succeed and a strong desire to enjoy their sport.

"This forum is the beginning of a consultation process that we hope will harness the enthusiasm of local volunteers and clubs. We want to unite all of our efforts to make sure that the borough continues to be a place were sport plays a leading role in the development of individuals and communities."

The Sports Development Unit will shortly be launching its 'Get Active, Get Volunteering' and 'Get Active, Get Coaching' schemes. The schemes will provide local volunteers and coaches with the opportunity to gain qualifications, knowledge and experience in all areas of sport and physical activity.

The views and ideas of those attending the Sports Forum will help shape both of these schemes.

Mike Watson, coach development officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said: "The trust recognises that the sporting infrastructure of the borough relies heavily on the dedication of volunteers prepared to give up their free time for the development of others.

“This forum and the ongoing consultation provides a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to help influence the future of sport and physical activity in their communities.

"There are lots of exciting projects developing, such as Leigh Sports Village, and in the build up to the 2012 Olympics we want the borough to be best placed to take advantage of all the opportunities we have.” Details: www.wlct.org
