Free summer sports activity for Londoners

By Pete Hayman    25 Jun 2010

Londoners will be given the opportunity to take part in a range of sports this summer as part of mayor Boris Johnson's multi-million pound bid to increase participation.

Around 120 projects across the capital will receive a share of £340,000 to enable people of all ages and abilities to become more active during July, August and September as part of Playsport London: FreeSport. The FreeSport programme is part of Johnson's wider £30m commitment to ensure a sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics by boosting participation and investing in grassroots sports.

Tennis, football, rugby and cricket are among the sports to be offered as part of the initiative, with the latest funding announcement adding to the £7m invested in improving facilities and £4m to promote better health. A further £3m has been earmarked to develop training skills. Johnson said: "As we build up to the 2012 Games, we want to inspire and encourage more Londoners to get active and have a go for themselves - particularly the youngsters who could be this country's sporting stars of the future."

Kate Hoey, the mayor's commissioner for sport, added: "We will continue to build on the solid work we are already implementing to provide opportunities for participation to people of all ages and enhance the provision of grass-roots sport."
