The Scottish Government has announced plans to invest £23.5m to capitalise on the anticipated economic, social and cultural benefits of hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Scottish first minister Alex Salmond and deputy first minister Nicola Sturgeon launched 'A games legacy for Scotland' on 1 September, which sets out how the government intends to ensure that it can create a long-term legacy from the 2014 Games. Improving the health and fitness of people across Scotland is a main priority of the new plans, which identify four key targets - to encourage Scottish people to become more active; to promote learning and culture; to support green and regeneration schemes; and to develop business, skills and tourism.

sportscotland will contribute £18m from its own £25.5m legacy funding pot to help support athletes and improve facilities as part of the government's initiative, while a further £5.5m has been put forward by the Big Lottery Fund 2014 Communities Grants Programme. Salmond said: "As well as having great ambitions for Scotland's sporting stars at the 2014 Games, this Government has great aspirations for the event to be a catalyst for physical, economic and social regeneration.

"A games legacy for Scotland outlines an ambitious long term approach that aims to capitalise on this once in a generation opportunity to host a major international sporting event in the heart of Scotland." Meanwhile, Glasgow City Council (GCC) has also announced its legacy plans for the 2014 Games, which include increasing participation through investment in sports clubs and coaches, as well as upgraded transport infrastructure and efforts to establish Glasgow as one of the most eco-friendly cities in Europe.

GCC leader Steven Purcell said: "The council will do everything it possibly can to ensure that the 2014 Commonwealth Games leave Glasgow more prosperous, active, inclusive, accessible, green and with an enhanced international image and outlook."
