Governing bodies to demand clamp down on ticket touts
The chief executives of four of England’s top sports bodies are to meet secretary of state Tessa Jowell this week and request new laws to clamp down on ‘secondary sales’ and ticket touting.
Officials from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the Football Association (FA), the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) will ask the government to tighten laws and increase fines.
The ECB is to lead calls for tougher legislation, as the demand for tickets for the forthcoming Ashes series grows. Online auction websites such as eBay are fuelling secondary sales and tickets for the first test at Lord’s are selling for up to seven times their face value.
Although sales of tickets are typically non-transferable, the resale of tickets for sports other than football is not technically illegal – something the ‘Four Sports’ group wants to change. The government recently committed to enforcing tighter control over ticket sales for a London Olympics, if the bid is successful.
