Green awards for Radisson

By Tom Walker    05 Oct 2010

Hotel operator Radisson Edwardian has been awarded three gold accreditations by the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS).

Each of Radisson Edwardian's 12 four and five star London hotels were assessed by the GTBS covering a range of areas from energy and water efficiency, to waste management and local community support.

The Radisson Edwardian Heathrow, Radisson Edwardian New Providence Wharf & The May Fair hotels were found to excel each achieving a gold accreditation. The group also received a further 11 silver stars for its operations.

The group has introduced a number of initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint - including a new fleet of hybrid vehicles to reduce emissions from necessary travel, while low carbon journeys by guests are actively encouraged.

Ecofriendly soaps have been sourced for the 2,000+ guest bathrooms, new energy efficient lighting is being installed and all of the restaurants showcase the 'best of British' produce.

Paul Mansi, chief operating officer, said that the introduction of "green teams" had been instrumental in the delivery of its eco-friendly measures.

"We have a Green Team at each hotel tasked with effecting the company's carbon footprint," he said.

"Everyone is doing their best to think greener and be greener. We've made huge strides in fuel savings and the management of energy, with new and better ways of working being recorded every day."

The GTBS is the national sustainable tourism certification scheme for the UK, providing environmental advice and auditing to the hospitality industry.

Originally developed in partnership with Visit Scotland, it is now the only certification scheme validated by Visit Britain, through the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT).
