Groupon acquires last-minute hotel booking app Blink
Daily deals site Groupon has acquired the last-minute hotel booking app Blink and will add it to its Groupon Getaways travel arm, as business interests continue to grow in hospitality and booking applications.
Blink, the Madrid-based start-up, currently works with over 2,000 hotel partners across Europe. Though the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, the app is to be rebranded Blink by Groupon. Blink was originally founded in 2011 and had raised around $2.5 million in funding before the aquisition was announced.
Groupon Getaways is currently powered by Expedia, working with hotels and other partners to provide travel deals and experiences in 48 countries across the world.
The acquisition could be viewed as a move by Groupon and Expedia to strengthen their ties in the travel business, or as a way of Groupon making steps to eventually move out into the market on its own in the coming years.
The deal marks another step in the rise of Spanish last-minute start-ups, with competitor app Hot also growing in market prominence.
This is the second acquisition of a travel start-up in Spain in the past few weeks. Scottish company Skyscanner recently purchased Barcelona-based hotel metasearch tool Fogg for an undisclosed sum, as the business looks to take its hotel-search service in-house.
