Image: The lido is to be reopened for public use

Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council (RCT) has been awarded £2.3m of Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) support towards plans for the restoration of a historic Pontypridd lido.

The Grade II*-listed complex in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park - built in 1927 - is set be transformed under the council's plans and brought back into use with modern facilities.

RCT's £6.2m project will open up the lido for the first time since 1991 and will include the provision of a heated 25m main pool; an activity pool; and a splash pool, as well as a café. Capita Symonds is project manager.

A historic interpretation centre is also proposed, while the HLF funding will also help RCT to provide accredited conservation skills training for young people involved with the revamp.

Dr Manon Williams, chair of the HLF committee for Wales, said: "This project will restore the Lido to its former glory and in doing so create a fantastic visitor attraction and community hub."
