Hearts await stadium revamp verdict
Heart of Midlothian Football Club (Hearts) expects to know by the end of the year whether its £51m redevelopment project has been given planning permission.
At the centre of plans, submitted to City of Edinburgh Council in January, is a new 10,000-seat main stand for the club's Tynecastle Stadium. The redevelopment at the stadium, which has been the home of Hearts since 1886, will increase the total capacity by 6,000 seats to 23,000. It will replace the current 4,500-seat main stand, which was designed by architect Archibald Leich, and built in 1914.
A hotel, a gym and a new 1,150sq m (12,380sq ft) club shop are also planned as part of the project. If planning consent is given, the club hopes to start work in mid-2009, with completion expected in 2011. A spokesperson for the club said: "We are currently awaiting a decision from the City of Edinburgh Council which we expect would be announced at the end of the year."
